5th grade novel study

For the past couple of weeks all of the fifth grade classes split up for novel study. In Mrs. Neyland's class they are reading the book called Voyage of the Dawn Treader, which had been turned into a movie. In Mrs. Anderson's class they are reading a book called Hatchet a fictional story written by Gary Paulson. Mr. Lemming's class is reading Loser and Mrs. Guinn's class is reading Leon's Story. All of these books are great, and different in many ways. I am reading Hatchet which is about a kid named Brian Robeson. While flying to see his father in Canada his pilot has a heart attack and crashes. Leaving him in the Canadian Wilderness by himself. He has to live on his own for however long he is there which includes hunting his food on his own. One day a plane comes back to rescue him from his suffering. Novel Studies has been so much fun for everyone.

Fossil Formation

Making a fossil can take a long time, but with this amazing game you can make one in minutes. First we chose the way it died.Then what enviroment  it died in. After that we chose the type of weather the fossil was exposed. Lastly you pick how the new born fossil was found.This has been the best fossil  making I've ever done.

This Week in Science

On Thursday lastweek in science we cut up sponges into a circle, square, or a triangle. Next we put sand over the sponge. Then we pored salt water over the sand (some of us had tap water.) Now Mr.Lemming and Mrs.Anderson are going to cook them in the oven on high heat and next week we are going to see how it turns out. al

Avery and the Big Chunky Elephant

Avery is studying and working hard to do her science adaptations so was the whole class. We were working on our animals and trying to figure out their adaptations. We are doing this for a science activity, and we did great. This is just one example but I'm going to keep writing about why we're doing this activity. It all started with a science investigation when we were testing bird beaks and what they where good for. For example, if we took a Humming Bird from its natural habitat and moved it to the the ocean it would take along time to adjust to that new habitat. So if you did move them many of those birds would die but some would adjust and be able to survive. So over time their beaks would change so they could live near the ocean and be able to live on the ocean and suck krill and dead stuff on the beach and still live. Reading in the Classroom

In reading we read about lightning, thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes. The story was called Eye of the Storm, Chasing Storms with Warren Faidley. It is a story about chasing huge and dangerous storms. Warren Faidley and his friend chased the storms around the world and took pictures. The pictures were fascinating and they gave me goose bumps. Warren kept a diary and in the story. The dairy was about chasing storms and his feelings about them. The reason he is a storm chaser is because when he was a boy he would watch lightning storms and then take pictures. People would buy his pictures to put in books, magazines and newspapers. We did this activity with the person sitting beside us. It is a very extraordinary story that has a lot of information on stupendous storms! I enjoyed reading this story a lot and it was a fun activity for the class.

This Week's Fantastic Project

This week our class did an awesome experiment. The question was..."Will the height of a ramp affect the distance the mini car will travel?"The class did this in groups of 4 or 5. The class had to work as a team to accomplish this.
The class learned that the higher the ramp was, the farther the mini car travels.The lower the ramp was, the shorter distance the mini car will travel.This took about 30 min. time.The class really enjoyed this experiment.

Draw a Scientist.

Starting on Tuesday, Mr Lemming assigned a challenge. He asked each table group to draw a scientist. From tattoos to huge belt buckles, everyone made  fantastic scientists. It took most of us almost two days to complete, although it all payed off. Every one was laughing and staring, both in amusement. On the second day, when Mr. Lemming rung the bell, everyone hurried to get their spectacular and crazy scientists done. We all finished though. I think that everyone had a great time. -Zoe Cornell

The Return of School

The past four days were filled with many challenges, activities, and games. Unfortunately, I did not take any pictures during the activities to give you a better idea of what we are doing. The underlying theme for everything we did in class was "community." With thirty bodies in a portable for 180 days it is inevitable there will be some disagreements and spaces invaded. To bring awareness to this and to reduce the number of conflicts I focus on creating a healthy community for the first several weeks of class. This focus creates an environment for the remainder of the year that is conducive to exploring the curriculum and challenging ourselves. Next week students will begin completing homework on their blogs. Prior to working on them, the students will be given specific details on how to access and update their blogs. In the beginning of using this medium students will not be able to view other student's blogs, as they use the blogs more they will be given more privileges and be able view one anothers. Next week I am hoping a student will be updating this blog. Until then, be well.
